Dr Michael Peterkin graduated in medicine from the University of Western Australia in 1973. After three years of residency at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Fremantle Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital and Kalgoorlie Hospital (where he was the first resident to work in this hospital), medicine was too much like hard work for Dr Peterkin. His love for wine and winemaking could not be ignored any longer and, as if a degree in medicine wasn't enough, he attended Roseworthy Agricultural College in Adelaide from 1976 to 1978 where he studied viticulture and winemaking. When Dr Peterkin returned to Western Australia, he made wine for Dr Kevin Cullen and his wife Diana. After the 1980 vintage was completed he was persuaded to work in Dr Cullen's medical practice in Busselton which rekindled his interest in medicine. In the years that followed, Dr Peterkin completed postgraduate degrees in obstetrics, gynaecology and postgraduate work in anaesthetics.  Dr Peterkin adds there are very few professions where you get to touch people's lives as intimately as you do in medicine and considers it a noble profession.
