Dr Koppman graduated as a doctor from ANU in 2012 and completed internship and residency during 2013-14 at The Canberra Hospital and Calvary Hospital. In 2015 Dr Koppman moved to Dili, Timor-Leste, with his family and for two years worked as the Medical Officer at the US Embassy where he led a three-person Health Unit responsible for the primary care of 60 American and around 250 Timorese staff. In 2017 he began a Masters of Public Health & Tropical Medicine through James Cook University, and continued clinical work through a voluntary role at the Dili National Hospital, and as the locum doctor for the Australian Embassy Clinic. Prior to becoming a doctor, Michael worked for some 11 years in the science-policy field for the Australian Government, and in an environmental health role for the prevention of dengue fever in the Torres Strait islands.
