Doctor Michael Karpa is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in oculoplastics, glaucoma and developing world ophthalmology. He received a Bachelor of Science with first class honours from James Cook University in Townsville, double majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry. He began research in molecular recognition chemistry, working in Australia at James Cook and Monash Universities, and the United States at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
Doctor Karpa trained in the Royal Australian Army as a Specialist Service Officer Pilot, where he flew both fixed and rotary wing military aircraft. He completed Medical School at Flinders University, underwent registrar training at the Sydney Eye Hospital and completed two ophthalmology fellowship’s, the first with the Fred Hollows Foundation in remote Australia, Fiji and Vanuatu and the second at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust in the United Kingdom. After completing the oculoplastics and glaucoma fellowship in Cornwall, Doctor Karpa completed a further four months of fellowship training in glaucoma at the King's College Hospital in London, before returning to Cairns to practice.
Doctor Karpa is actively involved in basic science and clinical research with international peer-reviewed publications on synthetic, organic and molecular recognition chemistry as well as on sensory impairment and eye disease. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Medicine for his work on The Blue Mountains Eye Study, examining the impacts of visual and other sensory impairments on older persons, through the University of Sydney. In wider healthcare activities, Doctor Karpa works with the IDEAS Van delivering first world ophthalmology care to indigenous communities in rural and remote Queensland and continues to be involved with the provision of ophthalmology services in low resource environments.
