Dr Copeman graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1984 and was an Intern at Royal North Shore Hospital. In 1985 he moved to the Children's Hospital for paediatric training, and then to Oxford, UK, to study cancer research. In 1991 he completed paediatric training at the Children's Hospital, specializing in oncology.
Since 1992, Dr Copeman has practised part-time as a paediatrician in Sydney. At the same time, he has been involved in introducing new anti-cancer drugs into Australia. He has worked with two pharmaceutical companies on treatments for lung, breast, bowel and prostate cancers and leukaemias, and lectured widely on cancer therapies.
Since 2004, Dr Copeman has been working in the Northern Beaches Cancer Service with Dr Jonathan Page, and looking after cancer patients at Manly Hospital.
