Michael graduated MBBS (distinction) from the University of Adelaide in 1976. He continued post-graduate training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre, before completing his cardiology training at Green Lane Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand. He worked with the Medical Research Council of New Zealand developing new methods for treating heart attacks. He subsequently completed an MD at Washington University, St Louis investigating heart metabolism with positron emission tomography.
On his return to Australia in 1988, Michael continued his interest in interventional cardiology and non-invasive cardiac imaging with echocardiography.
