Assoc Prof Matthew Scott-Young completed his undergraduate medical degree at the University of Queensland in 1986 and obtained his post graduate qualification as an orthopaedic surgeon from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1994.  Assoc Prof Scott-Young went on to complete a spinal fellowship at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, England, in 1995.  Assoc Prof Scott-Young practises as a spine surgeon in the Southport medical precinct, where his outpatient consultations are held at Gold Coast Spine, located at Southport Central, and his operating sessions are performed at Pindara Private Hospital. Assoc Prof Scott-Young performs all aspects of spine surgery, particularly in the treatment of degenerative conditions, deformity, and cancer of the spine.  Being competent in all approaches to the spine, as well as the instrumentation and current concepts of treatment of the spine, he strives to match the patient’s condition with the most appropriate technology available through approaches that are minimally invasive. Assoc Prof Scott-Young pioneered the use of lumbar and cervical total disc replacement in Australia.  He has presented extensively on the topic and has authored publications and chapters in texts related to the topic of disc arthroplasty.  He has participated in the development of lumbar disc replacement prostheses and instruments.  He is also currently serving on the executive committee of an FDA trial investigating a cervical total disc replacement prosthesis.
