In 1997, Dr Carmody completed his specialist training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, after which he moved to the United Kingdom as a senior registrar for the Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge and for the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

After leaving the United Kingdom, Dr Carmody then returned to Brisbane and became the Senior Lecturer for General Surgery in the University Department of Surgery at the Mater. He is also the RACS Supervisor of Surgical Training for the organisation. His greatest professional achievement to date is recently receiving the President's Award for services to Surgical Training in 2006 at the College of Surgeons in Melbourne.

Dr Carmody's special interests are in laparoscopic and upper gastrointestinal surgery and he currently consults at Fourth Floor Surgery on a sessional basis, taking on a public appointment at the Mater Hospital Brisbane.

Dr Carmody is a Member of the OSSANZ (Obesity Surgery Society of Australia & New Zealand) and is a Foundation Member of ANZGOSA (Australian & New Zealand Gastro-Oesophageal Surgery Association).
