Dr Matthew Best is a cardiologist with a sub-specialty in heart failure, and key interests extending to cardiomyopathies, pulmonary hypertension and the management of patients with advanced heart failure – including those needing cardiac transplantation.
Dr Best’s approach to patient care is one of up-to-date best practice care, educating and empowering patients to participate in their health care in order to achieve optimal outcomes.
Dr Best is trained in coronary angiography and highly trained in right heart catheterisation and endomyocardial biopsy.
After receiving his undergraduate qualifications from The University of Western Australia, Dr Best trained in cardiology at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) and Hollywood Private Hospital, receiving his FRACP in 2004. He was the first cardiologist in Western Australia to return after completing a dedicated international clinical fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation from Papworth Hospital in England, and has worked in a number of international cardiac transplant units.
During his time at the cardiac transplant unit at RPH, clinical work there saw the introduction of many new devices and drugs. These include ultra-filtration for heart failure, levosimendan inotrope support and the new generation non-pulsatile left ventricular assist devices.
Dr Best is also responsible for supervising postgraduate training in cardiology at Hollywood.
