Martin is a consultant psychiatrist who has worked for over a decade in the field of mental health. He has an interest in treating bipolar disorders, anxiety, depression and psychotic illnesses using a combination of medication and psychological therapies. After completing his medical training in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 2004, Martin moved to Sydney in 2005 where he commenced his specialist training in psychiatry in the Sydney Local Health District at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the Concord Centre for Mental Health. His final years of training focused on the early treatment and prevention of relapse of mood and psychotic disorders in those presenting in the early stages of illness. As a consultant psychiatrist he has worked in rural and urban settings, including as a staff specialist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and as a Visiting Medical Officer servicing the Greater Southern area of New South Wales at the Chisholm Ross Unit at Goulburn Base Hospital.
