Dr Mark Polizzotto sees haematology outpatients and inpatients at the Kinghorn Cancer Centre and St Vincent’s Hospital, and outpatients in immunology at St Vincent’s Hospital. He has a particular interest in malignant haematology, and in cancers caused by infectious agents especially occurring in patient with immune deficiencies.
Dr Polizzotto is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. He is a member of several medical bodies including the Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand, Australasian Leukaemia Lymphoma study group, the Australian Society for HIV Medicine, the American Society of Haematology, and the European Haematology Association. He established and serves as the principal investigator for the Australian site of the U.S. National Cancer Institute AIDS Maligancy Consortium, their only core site outside the United States
Background
Dr Polizzotto received his medical degree from the University of Western Australia, including a period of research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute at the University of Melbourne. He then completed speciality training in internal medicine at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, and in haematology and haematopathology at the Alfred Hospital and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He undertook further subspeciality training at the National Cancer Institute at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, subsequently joining their faculty as an attending (consultant) physician and clinical investigator before returning to Australia to take up his present role.
