Dr Mark Holmes (Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Specialist)

He is a Senior Consultant Physician in the Department of Thoracic Medicine, Royal Adelaide Hospital, a position held for 23 years.  He is Head of the South Australian Lung Transplant Services and Head of the Respiratory Clinical Trials Unit of the Royal Adelaide Hospital principally examining new approaches to airways related diseases (asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis) and pulmonary fibrosis.  Previously he was Head, South Australian Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit (1990-1999) at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.


Prior to his position at the Royal Adelaide Hospital he studied for 3 years (1987-1990) at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA gaining a Doctor of Medicine degree in the area of Molecular Genetics of Lung Diseases and Gene Therapy and has undertaken further studies in Gene Therapy in Alabama, USA (1998).


Professor Holmes is actively involved in basic and clinical research and has co-authored over 80 original scientific publications and had over 150 scientific presentations at national and international respiratory meetings.  The main focus of his research is in the mechanisms of airway injury in lung transplant rejection and smoking related lung disease. He is Chairman of the Australian Lung Foundation Research Advisory Committee. Professor Holmes has been practicing at Northern Respiratory in the northern part of Adelaide since 1994 and has looks forward to continuing input into the management of patients in the area in all aspects of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. Additionally, he consults in Kent Town at Respiratory SA and at the Chest Clinic
