Dr Efthymiou, a Monash graduate, completed his specialist gastroenterology training at the Alfred Hospital. Dr Efthymiou furthered his career with a two-year postgraduate fellowship in advanced endoscopy through St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, where he trained in ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, capsule endoscopy and balloon enteroscopy.
Dr Efthymiou undertook advanced training at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada. During this 12 month fellowship, he became expert in advanced gastroscopy and colonoscopy, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, balloon enteroscopy, endoscopic treatment of oesophageal pouches, endoscopic treatment of achalasia, endoscopic mucosal resection, palliation of malignant strictures using stents and ablative techniques for Barrett’s oesophagus.
Following this, he was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Melbourne in 2011 for work in the use of advanced endoscopic techniques in the investigation and management of colon cancer/pre-cancer and obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. He is actively involved in research, has been published in national and international journals, and regularly presents at national and international conferences.
He has cutting edge experience in advanced endoscopic techniques as well as general gastroenterology, including inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology, functional gut disorders, and gastrointestinal malignancies.
He is currently appointed as a Staff Gastroenterologist at the Austin Hospital, Heidelberg, and has commenced private practice in Essendon and Coburg. Dr Efthymiou provides endoscopic services through North West Day Hospital, Ascot Vale. Dr Efthymiou is also fluent in the Greek language.
