How long have you been practising medicine? I graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1996, completing my internship and basic physician training year in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. I relocated to Mackay in 1998 to be closer to my partner, and worked rotations in the Mackay Base hospital. I completed a postgraduate diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DRANZCOG in 2000, that allows me to deliver babies. I attained my GP fellowship from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2001. During the 6 years of living in Mackay, I gained valuable experience in understanding what it’s like to work as a General Practitioner in a regional town with limited access to specialist services. I rounded out my skills as a physician with after-hours emergency work and by looking after inpatients at the Mater Private Hospital. How long have you been practising medicine in the Albany Creek area? I have been working in Albany Creek since 2005, a year after the birth of my eldest child. My partner was transferred to Brisbane for work at around the same time of our daughter’s birth. I returned to part-time work after maternity leave a year after she was born. We live locally and have enjoyed being a part of this community for the last 13 years. What inspired you to become a Doctor? During the final years in high school, a number of people close to me were affected by medical conditions that were both devastating but also potentially treatable. It was this awe of what medicine could achieve and how as a doctor you could really make a difference to people’s lives that inspired me to apply to study a degree in medicine. Our family doctor was a knowledgeable, caring, kind and compassionate man who was a great listener and communicator. He was a wonderful inspiration to me. What’s your passion personally? My family. My husband and our three children mean the world to me and have the shaped the person I have become.  I love getting the opportunity to get out with them for a bike ride, go for a bush walk, stroll along the beach or check out some of the local markets for some fresh produce.  We have a very active border collie who loves going for regular walks and two rescue cats that love snuggling up on the couch next to us when we’re curled up with a good book. What’s your passion professionally? The thing that is most special about General Practice is its great diversity. Being able to offer continuity of care for our patients, supporting them through hard times and seeing them experience the joyful times. I enjoy developing a strong sense of rapport with my patients.   When I worked in Mackay, I was incredibly fortunate to be able to deliver babies in a hospital setting and then see those babies then come in as young people into the practice.  I love that we get to see members of multiple generations in a family unit and can make the connections between these families, watching them grow and develop over time.
