Dr Luke Heywood completed his medical training at the UNSW in 2007. Keen to return to Queensland, Luke moved back home to Brisbane shortly after, taking up a position with Queensland Health. Luke received his Fellowship in Anaesthesia (FANZCA) in January, 2015. Since that time, he has held a public appointment at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) in conjunction with his private practice. Throughout his professional life, Luke has had a strong interest in the use of Ultrasound at the patient’s bedside to facilitate effective, efficient and precise clinical assessment and care. This interest has resulted in his oversight of a dedicated perioperative ultrasound service at the RBWH, which aims to improve the quality and efficiency of patient care while providing valuable learning opportunities in clinical ultrasound for Anaesthetists of the future.

In 2015, Luke, accompanied by his wife and their three children, spent three months working with the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, Fiji. During this time, Luke was privileged to contribute to the education of trainee Anaesthetists from across the Pacific, as well as assisting in the clinical care of patients. His experience in Fiji kindled his interest in how best to meet the challenges of delivering a sustainable, quality health care service in countries with a low GDP.

In his day-to-day clinical practice, Luke enjoys the challenge of providing high quality care tailored to the needs of the individual patient and their surgical procedure. He looks forward to being a part of the team caring for you on the day of your procedure and welcomes any feedback you may have.
