Dr Ryan is a medical doctor with extensive experience in treating mental health issues including the most complex and treatment-resistant cases.
Dr Ryan qualified as a general doctor in 2003 and has been working full-time in psychiatry since 2005. He successfully completed his specialist training and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Psychiatrists in 2011. He has unconditional General and Specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. All of his tertiary qualifications, including medical degree, were obtained at the University of Queensland. He completed training in psychiatry at various hospitals around Brisbane including the Princess Alexandra, Mater Children’s’, and Royal Brisbane Hospitals.
He holds an appointment as a Senior Visiting Medical Officer to the Ipswich and West Moreton Health Service and serves as the clinical leader for teams composed of psychologists, social workers, clinical nurses and psychiatric registrars. Like all senior Queensland Health doctors, he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland. Dr Ryan also works in a number of indigenous mental health clinics throughout Queensland and serves as a medical specialist on a Government Tribunal.
Dr Ryan is committed to providing a high level of service in private practice. He established, and is the director of, Westside Medical Specialists in Toowong. He holds admitting privileges to the Toowong Private Hospital.
Dr Ryan practices in the area of General Adult psychiatry and accepts adult patients with a wide variety of problems including bipolar disorder, depression and other mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and psychotic disorders.
He is committed to an “evidence-based medicine” approach to the care of his patients and thus considers biological, psychological, and social factors when assessing problems and developing management plans for his patients.
Dr Ryan has advanced training in CBT and psychotherapy and recognises both the importance of psychological therapies and the limitations of medicines.
Dr Ryan aims to be approachable and non-judgmental whilst being professional and outcome-focused.
Prior to completing University degrees in science and medicine, Dr Ryan completed a Law degree and was admitted as a barrister.
