After graduating from University of QLD in 1976 and completing internships at Mater Hospital and Ipswich/ Kingaroy Hospitals, Dr Steffensen gained further clinical experience in the UK in the areas of Obstetrics/Gynaecology and Anaesthetics. He commenced GP practice with his wife Dr Sue Scott, in Cleveland in 1981.

Dr Steffensen's interest in Musculoskeletal Medicine began to develop in 1985 and he was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine from Otago University and subsequently a Fellowship from the Australian College of Physical Medicine. He has conducted teaching courses for General Practitioners in this field and continues to attend regular courses in Musculoskeletal Medicine and Sports Medicine both within and outside Australia. Dr Steffensen has an active interest in sporting activities and has a good understanding of medical problems in these areas.
