Dr Karen Rowland graduated from Adelaide Medical School in 1994. She undertook training in Infectious Disease at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2000. She is a member of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases, the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine and the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control.

Karen worked as a Senior Staff Specialist in Infectious Disease at the Royal Adelaide Hospital from 2001 until 2014. During this time she gained extensive experience in the management of complex infections, including infections in patients on chemotherapy, in intensive care, post-surgical patients and patients with HIV infection and viral hepatitis. She was the physician associated with the Infection Prevention and Control Unit from 2007 until 2013, coordinating successful initiatives to prevent hospital acquired infections including the Hand Hygiene Australia initiative.

After some reflective time away from medicine, Karen has returned to private practice, joining North Adelaide Oncology as an Associate in 2014. She provides inpatient consultations at Calvary Hospitals in North Adelaide and Wakefield St, the Memorial Hospital and St Andrew’s Hospital.
