Dr. Justin Bessell is a General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Australian Metabolic + Obesity Surgery, Calvary Adelaide Hospital. He is a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at Flinders & Adelaide Universities, and a Senior Consultant Surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre. Dr. Bessell provides visiting surgical services to the Darwin Private Hospital and to the Australian Defence Force. He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, and has deployed to war zones including East Timor (twice) and Solomon Islands, and to Banda Aceh in support of ADF military operations. He is formerly the Chairman of the Military Section of the College of Surgeons, and the former Chairman of the S.A. Regional Board in General Surgery. As well as his specialty of Bariatric. Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery, he continues to perform a wide variety of general, upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery, and interventional endoscopy procedures, and colonoscopy bowel cancer screening. In 2003 Dr. Bessell founded Australian Obesity Surgery, which enshrined the concept of a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to medical weight loss – a collaboration which embeds allied healthcare professionals within the matrix of obesity management using scientifically-proven, evidence-based therapies. This approach has since developed into the standard of care for Bariatric practices. Dr. Bessell trained in Adelaide, during which period he completed a Doctorate in minimally-invasive surgery culminating in a six month period of research into robotically-assisted laparoscopic surgery in Germany. Prior to returning home, he spent a further two years in Brisbane and Leicester. He is married with 3 children and enjoys racing bicycles and cars. Dr. Bessell has over 50 published medical articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed international surgical journals, and has presented innumerable papers and research topics at national and international surgical meetings and conferences.
