Dr Russell grew up in Canowindra where he completed High School. Studied medicine and Bachelor of Medical Science at UNSW Sydney, where he graduated with Honours. The last 2 years of the degree was spent at Wagga Wagga. Trained as a junior medical officer at John Hunter Hospital Newcastle (3 years), Sydney Children’s Hospital (1 year) and Orange Base Hospital (1 year). Commenced general practice training at Wollongong and completed his fellowship at the Royal Flying Doctors Service in Broken Hill where he met his wife who was also working for the RFDS as a doctor. Dr Russell relocated to Orange in 2013 to be closer to family and intends to stay in this area. Along the way he has achieved a diploma in paediatrics, diploma in anaesthetics and nearing completion of a masters in public health and tropical medicine. Since being in Orange has developed a special interest in skin cancer medicine and completed further study in the way of a certificate in primary care skin cancer medicine through University of Queensland.
