In his mid-seventies Dr Smiles is a senior practicing eye specialist in Canberra. Formative training was Sydney University, Birmingham & Midland Eye Hospital and the University Hospital of Wales. With a special interest in ophthalmic imaging and medical laser, he was naturally drawn to diabetes, which remains his main interest. Having established a diabetic eye clinic in Samoa 20 years ago, he continues to attend at 6 monthly intervals.
