John Orchard is a Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician with a combination career in professional sport team care, sports administration, clinical sports medicine practice and research. He is a medical school graduate from University of Melbourne but has spent most of his career based in Sydney. He has an Adjunct Professor appointment through the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney, with general research stream being sports injury epidemiology and prevention and over 250 publications with an H-index of 53. He was the Chief Medical Officer for the 2015 Cricket World Cup and continues to work as the Chief Medical Officer for Cricket Australia, and has worked as Chief Medical Officer for CNSW since 2008. He has 20 years of experience working in various professional football codes (Sydney Swans 1994-1997, Sydney Roosters 1998-2013, NSW State of Origin team 2000-2006). He is on the Editorial board for various major sports medicine journals, including the American Journal of Sports Medicine and British Journal of Sports Medicine and Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine. In clinical practice, his areas of special interest include: exercise prescription, tendon injuries (especially Achilles, patella, hamstring and gluteal), plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, knee and hip osteoarthritis, muscle strains, knee iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome and knee ACL injuries. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 2020 for significant service to sports medicine, particularly cricket.
