Dr Masson graduated from Glasgow University in 1985 following completion of his internal training in several hospitals across Glasgow, Scotland undertaking an elective at North Shore hospital in Sydney and with the RFDS in Cairns, FNQ. He completed his specialist training in General Medicine and Gastroenterology following registrar posts in Inverness and Aberdeen and Senior Registrar position in Aberdeen, Scotland. In 1997 John took up a full time position as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at The Townsville General Hospital and was involved with the transfer to the new hospital site at Douglas. John was the Director of Gastroenterology at TTH until 2006 when he moved to the Mater Campus opening his private practice at the Fulham Road Campus specialising in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. John continues as a VMO at The Townsville Hospital and is involved with teaching and supervision at both campuses at student and registrar level. In 2011 John was awarded an "Excellence in Mentoring" from The Royal Australasian College of Physicians in recognition of his role in medical education. John is currently the Honorary Secretary to the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Endoscopic Training.
