Dr John Hayes and Dr Wayne Stafford were instrumental in the establishment of the leading Cardiac Electrophysiology Service at the St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital in 1993.

The unit has set the standards for many years, leading in the clinical practice of cardiac electrophysiological testing, curative radiofrequency ablation procedures for all arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation ablation. We also lead and innovate in the field of cardiac pacemakers and implantable defibrillators (ICD) through involvement in clinical research. The unit has led in the innovative field of biventricular pacing to promote cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) for patients with heart failure. Through collaborative partnerships, St. Andrew's Electrophysiology Service leads with radiation reduction having the only installed St Jude Medical MediGuide system in the southern hemisphere and the only Boston Scientific Rhythmia high resolution 3D mapping system in Queensland. The service continues to grow, performed over 1000 procedures annually. The unit is involved in an annual audit process which continues to monitor and confirm a quality service with outcomes among the best in the world, along with safe practice and low complication rates. The Unit continues to be involved in innovative clinical research, publications, teaching, sub specialty training in cardiac electrophysiology and the highest quality outcomes for their patients.

Dr John Hayes is a Graduate of the University of Queensland in 1982.
