Dr. Shannon is a Psychiatrist who incorporates a range of evidence-based therapies, helping her patients discover their own unique pathway to recovery from mental health problems. Joanne has more than 10 years’ experience as a Psychiatrist and treats patients of all ages presenting with Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Schizophrenia and Trauma and other related mental health issues.

Dr. Shannon previously practised as a veterinary surgeon, and in this time realised many of the animals’ owners were presenting with mental health issues that did not seem to be addressed. Joanne was then motivated to train in Psychiatry, gaining her qualifications at the University of Sydney. She has since practiced at St George Hospital in Kogarah, St Vincent’s Hospital in Darlinghurst, the Richmond Clinic in Lismore and also works with the Justice Health & Forensic Mental Health Network as well as in private practice.

Joanne believes it is important all patients have a choice in how their mental state is looked after and offers a broad range of evidence-based therapies. These include somatic therapies which focus on the body, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy (TMS) as a short-term program for Depressive Disorders, as well as Neurofeedback, a computer-based therapy to help patients self-regulate brain activity. Dr. Shannon also combines a range of psychotherapeutic techniques suited to the individual patient. Outside of the clinic, Dr. Shannon is trained as a Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator.

With experience combining these techniques, Joanne believes no single approach sufficiently addresses all aspects which contribute to the mental wellbeing of an individual patient. For this reason, Dr. Shannon incorporates traditional and adjunctive therapies and considers Neuromodulation to be effective in recovery for certain patient groups.

Joanne joined neuroCare in 2018 and works with the team to deliver TMS and Neurofeedback. Dr. Shannon Is currently taking bookings for new patients at the neuroCare Clinic in Sydney’s CBD, with initial consultations dedicated to a holistic and Psychiatric assessment of the patient’s presenting symptoms. Joanne incorporates Actigraphy (Sleep) Tracking and QEEG brain imaging as part of the initial assessment.

With these approaches, Dr Shannon is committed to offering holistic solutions within the practice of Psychiatry, upholding ethical standards, conscious of her patients’ unique circumstances.
