Dr James Symons is an Australian-trained specialist Urologist and Urological Surgeon, with Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and full membership of Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand. As well as robotic surgery, James has a special interest in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, along with managing the urinary and sexual symptoms of men who have survived prostate cancer - in particular incontinence and erectile dysfunction. When patients experience ill health or severe life stress, especially if it relates to a "cancer scare" it is not uncommon for their sense of well being to unravel. As a specialist Urologist and Fellow-trained Accredited Robotic Surgeon, Dr Symons' practice aims to minimise the burden of such events for his patients. James is a Sydney University graduate who studied with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a subspecialty fellowship in the UK, focusing on Robotic and Minimally Invasive Oncology Surgery for renal and prostrate pathology. As well as robotic surgery, he has a special interest in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, along with managing the urinary and sexual symptoms of men who have survived prostate cancer - in particular incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Recognising the value of a holistic approach to patient management, Sydney Urology has close links with some of Sydney's most experienced and dynamic fitness studios for a personalised approach to prehabilitation.
Dr Symons is actively involved in research and teaching. He has been affiliated with the Garvan Institute of Medical Research since 2010 and is privileged to be the first Urologist to consult onsite from the Kinghorn Cancer Centre. He is a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney, and is currently creating a module for the Masters program. James has an extensive academic history with invited presentations, lectures, research grants and prizes. He has published the world's largest series on the transperineal prostate biopsy and authored the inaugural chapter on the subject in Hinman's Atlas of Urologic Surgery.
