Dr James Leong is a vitreoretinal surgeon and medical retina specialist.

Dr Leong completed his medical training at The University of Sydney. He graduated with honours and was awarded the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists Prize and undergraduate Medal for Ophthalmology. In addition he was awarded the Clarence and Mabel Clark Prize in Ophthalmology.

After completing a Masters of Medicine in Ophthalmic Sciences Dr Leong undertook his specialist ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital.

Subsequently Dr Leong completed two international fellowships including a Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellowship associated with the University of British Columbia, Canada and a Medical Retina Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He was awarded the Sydney Hospitallers Norman Rose Travelling Scholarship and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology Study Scholarship.

Dr Leong has published numerous articles in peer reviewed ophthalmic journals and authored a number of textbook chapters. He has also been involved as a sub-investigator in a number of international clinical trials.

With both medical and surgical retina expertise Dr Leong has a particular interest in age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, macular holes, epiretinal membranes and retinal detachments.

Dr Leong places an emphasis on the patient doctor relationship, ensuring his patients have a good understanding of their condition and access to the latest treatment options available. Having grown up and living in the Shire, Dr Leong is dedicated to be bringing a high level of expertise and surgical skills to the residents of The Sutherland Shire and Illawarra.
