Dr Hugh McAlister, a New Zealander, was educated in Sydney, and started Medical School at the University of New South Wales. Having completed his medical education at Auckland Medical School, he subsequently trained in Cardiology at Green Lane Hospital, Auckland. After overseas appointments in London, New York and Cleveland, where he trained specifically in Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology, he returned to New Zealand and practised as a Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at Waikato hospital, Hamilton, for 18 years.
Dr McAlister made a number of contributions to Cardiology in New Zealand, setting up the New Zealand Pacing and Electrophysiology Group, starting the Electrophysiology Service in Hamilton, and more recently serving as New Zealand representative on the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand Council and the Scientific Committee of the National Heart Foundation of New Zealand. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, the American College of Cardiology and the International Heart Rhythm Society.
Since arriving in Townsville, in January 2007, Hugh and his wife have settled happily and enjoy the new lifestyle and friendly people of North Queensland. Outside interests include bridge, cricket, tennis and travel.
Dr. McAlister's special Cardiology interests are all aspects of arrhythmias and device therapy.
