Hilary spent 2.5 years working in Alice Springs after receiving her qualifications, and 3 months in Arnhem land whilst a student. The experience she gained was extensive and included time in the renal unit of the Alice Springs hospital. The path to medicine was indirect.

She originally trained in Engineering, with interests in medical technology. This ultimately led her to a position researching equipment used for child lung function in Princess Margaret Hospital. After working at Princess Margaret for a couple of years she decided she would like to be directly involved in patient care, and so embarked on medical training. Hilary is originally from South-West WA and was dux of Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School in 1996.

She lives with her husband and two children in Australind.
