Hein is a Sydney University medical graduate - and one in a number of other disciplines from various institutions, including in dermatology from Cardiff University (UK).
He is recognised bioethicist and internationally acclaimed expert in dermatoscopy (skin microscopy, to detect and accurately diagnose skin cancers). He wrote the skin cancer standards for the Royal Australian College of GPs. He is co-founder of the original Family Medicine Programme to train budding GPs into fully competent practitioners, and is co-founder and past President of the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. He has been a member of numerous clinical and medico-political committees
