Professor Russ became Director of Nephrology and Transplantation Services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide in 2002. He has been the Chairman of the Executive of the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) since 2002. Since 1997 he has been chair of the Australia and New Zealand Organ Donation (ANZOD) Registry, which collates and analyzes data on all deceased organ donors in Australia and New Zealand.
He is a past president of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Nephrology and is a past Councillor of the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand. From 1997 to 2006 he was chair of the National Renal Transplant Advisory Committee.
In March 2007, he was appointed chairman of the South Australian Renal Clinical Network, a body established by the Department of Health of the South Australian Government to advise on strategies for the delivery of renal care in that State. He is a member of the Clinical Senate of the SA Department of Health. He is chairman of the South Australian Transplant and Organ Donation Advisory Council.
Professor Russ is Head of the Transplantation Immunology Laboratory of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and leads an active laboratory-based research program. He has been a Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine of the University of Adelaide since 2003.
