Dr Butler graduated from the University of Sheffield (UK) in 1989. He completed his Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1992 and became a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1993. He has worked in the Illawarra since 2006 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in the same year. He has completed a Masters of Medical Education and is both a Clinical Associate Professor with the University of Wollongong and GP Registrar Supervisor with Coast City County General Practice Training. He is involved in teaching medical students from the University of Wollongong. Dr Butler is one of three National Assessment Advisors for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and has responsibility for managing one component of the licensing exams for doctors to become qualified General Practitioners.
