Dr Digby Cullen trained in gastroenterology in Perth, Western Australia. In 1992 he worked for 6 months as a locum Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at the University of Western Australia.
From 1992 to 1993 he was a research fellow at Nottingham University (UK), where his research focussed on the prevention of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ulcer, Helicobacter pylori and inflammatory bowel diseases.
He was a consultant gastroenterologist at Royal Perth Hospital between 1994 and 1996 and at Fremantle Hospital between 1996 and 2005 where he was Head of Department for 3 years.
Since then he has been predominantly in private practice at St John of God Subiaco Hospital.
Since 1994, Dr Cullen has been a member of the Scientific Committee and Board of the Busselton Health Study, the world’s second longest running general population study. He was chairman of the Business Committee of the Busselton Health Study for 5 years. He is also an actual member of the Busselton study cohort, having been born in Busselton. He has co-authored papers on the epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori, haemochromatosis, Coeliac disease and reflux disease.
Since 2005 Dr Cullen has worked with Australian Doctors for Africa conducting a gastroenterology aid program in Madagascar. He has a long-term interest in medical student teaching and endoscopic training in Australia and Madagascar. He was awarded the Officier de L’Ordre National de Madagascar in June 2016 for his aid work. His other interests include wine, hockey and surfing.
