Dr David Straton studied medicine at Bristol University in the UK, before migrating to New Zealand, where he trained as a psychiatrist, obtaining the Diploma of Psychological Medicine (DPM) from Otago University, and the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP). He was a lecturer in Psychological Medicine at the Wellington Clinical School of Medicine.
He did advanced training in psychotherapy at the Cassel Hospital in London, before being recruited to set up the Gold Coast Community Mental Health Service.
He has been in private practice on the Gold Coast since 1986. At times he has taught at Bond University and the University of Queensland.
He has a special interest in mood disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorder, panic and PTSD. He does psychotherapy with individuals and couples. He is happy to review medication and share care of patients with GPs and psychologists.
His wife, Dr Georgina Gibson, is a GP in Ashmore. They enjoy sailing a catamaran together.
