David began his interest in pain medicine whilst an Anaesthetic Registrar at Sydney Hospital in 1973. After Sydney Hospital went through a restructure in the early 1980’s, he took on the challenge of committing to pain relief medicine as a full-time vocation, and left the field of anaesthesiology.
In 1980, he formed a private multidisciplinary pain clinic in the Sydney CBD, the Sydney Pain Management Centre (SPMC). He also joined the team at Westmead Hospital, as a Visiting Medical Officer to their pain clinic.
In 1985, the SPMC opened the Newcastle Pain Management Centre at the request of Professor Gordon Kerridge, Professor of Orthopaedics at Royal Newcastle Hospital which continued to 1996.
SPMC developed cognitive behavioural inpatient program in 1989 at the Royal Rehabilitation Hospital at Ryde. From 1996, the SPMC moved from Ryde and the Sydney CBD to Parramatta where it continues to provide multidisciplinary pain management to this date. More recently SPMC has opened a practice at the Sydney Adventist Hospital.
David accepted the position of Director of Multidisciplinary Pain Services at Westmead Hospital in 1999, to establish a training program for the Faculty of Pain Medicine.
He was Secretary/Treasurer of the Australian Pain Society from 1985 to 1994, Vice President from 1994 to 1997, and President from 1997 to 2000. From 1986 till 1995, David was Treasurer of the Australian Pain Relief Society, a charity that supports education and research in Pain Medicine, and since then he’s continued as President. He also initiated a PhD scholarship program via APRA with the significant contribution from Geoff Gourlay, which now has 10 scholars.
David proudly continues to be the Medical Director of SPMC, where he co-ordinates and provides direction to all the wonderful clinical staff on patient care, planning, and ongoing management.
