Dr Fitzgerald was raised in Tasmania and was originally going to become a pilot before he serendipitously became inspired by medicine. David now combines his two mutual passions of aviation and medicine when he can. After completing his medical degree, David trained in aviation medicine and started work as a civil aviation safety authority (CASA) medical examiner in Tasmania. David completed his Masters in Occupational Medicine and gained his AFOEM Fellowship to work at CASA as a Senior Medical Officer, a position he retained for over eight years. David completed his Masters in Health Law which facilitated his move to Dubai where he worked as an occupational physician with Emirates.

David’s medical interests include fitness for duty assessments, aviation medicine, legal medicine, and medical education.

He is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Aviation and Occupational Medicine at the University of Otago and the Training Program Director for remote area Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM) trainees.

He is a committee member of; the Australasian Society of Aerospace Medicine, the training sub-committee of Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and the Continuing Professional Development lead of the Education Committee of AFOEM.

David holds a commercial pilot’s licence, aerobatics and tail wheel endorsements, multi-engine command instrument rating and has owned a Shrike Commander.
