Dr Wallington-Beddoe is currently a NHMRC Research Fellow at the Centre for Cancer Biology, University of South Australia, Senior Lecturer at Flinders University and a Consultant Clinical Haematologist at Flinders Medical Centre. He has integrated his academic and public hospital appointments with a private practice at Mount Barker. Dr Wallington-Beddoe is Medical Director of haematology clinical trials at Flinders Medical Centre and is the principal investigator for several multiple myeloma clinical trials whilst maintaining an active research program in this blood cancer. He has a vested interest in translating basic scientific research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with haematological malignancies, focusing on myeloma.
After completing specialist medical qualifications (FRACP/FRCPA) in the discipline of haematology at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, in 2009, Dr Wallington-Beddoe undertook PhD studies at The University of Sydney from 2010 to 2012. His work sought to investigate novel therapeutic strategies for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and resulted in several high impact publications and numerous national and international high profile conference presentations. In recognition of this work, Dr Wallington-Beddoe was awarded the 2012 Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand Albert Baikie Memorial Medal and New Investigator Grant. He relocated to Adelaide in 2013 to undertake post-doctoral research, investigating how certain lipids can be targeted in myeloma to enhance current therapies, and was shortly thereafter awarded an Australian Government NHMRC Peter Doherty Research Fellowship and also a Mary Overton Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Fellowship. He continues with basic and translational myeloma research which links in well with his role in clinical trials.
