Dr Conrad Macrokanis first completed a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Zoology, working as a field biologist with snakes and birds for several years prior to launching a career in medicine. After completing his Medical degree, he worked in Rural & Indigenous health for 15 years as a Rural GP Anaesthetist. Eventually he returned to Brisbane to re-train and since 2011 has worked as an Anaesthetic specialist, initially at the Mater Hospital for 7 years then with the Greenslopes Anaesthetic Service practicing Anaesthesia at most Brisbane private hospitals in a wide variety of surgical sub-specialities. His experience gained in the "bush" has resulted in broad clinical and academic practice. He is actively involved in Anaesthetic teaching, lecturing and research. He is involved in a national committee for Perioperative Care and a national facilitator for regional anaesthesia. More importantly, this broad exposure of country and people has made his practice very patient focused, optimising care prior to surgery, comforting patients and customising their anaesthetic for surgery and ensuring an optimised post-operative experience. He has travelled working abroad in developing countries including Uganda, India, Madagascar and Samoa.
