Cathmar trained in Scotland before moving to Australia in 1992. She has extensive experience in many aspects of medicine including emergency and rural health, with many years working for the Royal Flying Doctor Service Cairns, prior to opening her own practice in rural Victoria. Cathmar has a special interest in integrative health focussing on the whole person encompassing body, mind, and spirit as well as all aspects of lifestyle.
