Dr McAndrew grew up in far north Queensland before studying medicine at the University of Queensland. He then undertook training to be an Anaesthestic Specialist in various locations throughout Queensland before completing a fellowship in Cambridge, UK, specializing in transplantation and neuroanaesthesia.
Dr McAndrew commenced private practice with Narcosia Anaesthesia Group in 2004. He remains a VMO in public practice at the Princess Alexandra, as well as having a busy private practice at multiple Brisbane hospitals.
Dr McAndrew has a commitment to continuing medical education. He is a regular attendee and presenter at courses, conference and quality assurance meetings. He teaches medical students and junior doctors at a number of Brisbane hospitals.
Dr McAndrew lives with his wife and three children and enjoys reading and jogging.
