Bev’s undergraduate Medical degree is from University of Western Australia (UWA), including a Bachelor of Medical Science on breastfeeding, based mainly in the highlands of New Guinea, awarded First Class Honours in Biochemistry. Post-graduate O & G training was based at King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women (KEMH) in Perth, apart from 3 years in UK (Gloucester then Guy’s Hospital), for which she received the Duff-Freeman Award for Overseas Postgraduate Study in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (UWA). From early in her obstetric career she had a special interest in Genetics, and decided ultrasound was the best way for an obstetrician to approach this. In UK she was very involved in ultrasound, genetics and prenatal diagnosis, being the Fetal Medicine Registrar at Guy’s, with its huge departments in Genetics, Neonatal surgery, and Fetal Cardiology. Back in Perth, Bev ran a successful private O&G practice, worked at a fertility unit, and also ran the Adolescent Pregnancy Clinic at KEMH, before taking up the subspecialty training position for Certification in Obstetric and Gynaecological Ultrasound (COGU) in Melbourne 1992-3, at both the Royal Women’s Hospital and Monash Medical Centre. Only two obstetricians in WA have been awarded the highly-regarded RANZCOG subspecialty certification in O&G Ultrasound (COGU). Dr Hewitt is the only doctor in WA to complete the COGU qualification by examination and thesis. She also received the Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (O&G) 1992. Returning to Perth from Melbourne, Bev established her ultrasound practice in O&G in early 1994, and also continued fertility and gynaecology until 1997, as well as contributing to public ultrasound at KEMH and Joondalup Health Campus. Currently she concentrates on private practice, where she enjoys combining the medical assessment with a positive parental experience. She has also performed thousands of prenatal diagnostic procedures over the years. Dr Hewitt was the local liaison person and WA examiner for the international UK-based Fetal Medicine Foundation nuchal screening program, until accreditation for Australians was centralised to Melbourne. She has examined at subspecialty COGU and MFM, (maternal-fetal medicine), membership level, post-graduate, radiology (doctors and sonographers), diplomate and medical student level. She continues to participate in teaching, running workshops and mentoring at many of these levels. Committee work is currently COGU and has included RANZCOG WA, AAOGU, and the Prenatal Diagnosis Committee for the WA Department of Health. Despite having a clinical rather than academic career, she has published and spoken on wide-ranging topics including first trimester and second trimester screening, prenatal diagnosis, nuchal thickening, fetal anomalies, amniotic bands, twins, patient attitudes, fetal therapy, reasons for preterm birth, obstetric infection, and many gynaecological topics including gynaecological cancers. She continues to review submitted articles for publication and theses. Bev regularly attends international conferences in Obgyn Ultrasound topics and prenatal diagnosis.
