Dr. Antonio Di Ieva, a member of Macquarie Neurosurgery, is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery with expertise in neuro-oncology, pituitary and skull base surgery, specialising in microneurosurgery, and pain treatment. He is a leader in the field of neuro-endoscopy and minimally invasive “keyhole” neurosurgery.
A/Prof. Di Ieva utilises a multidisciplinary management of tumours of the central and peripheral nervous system through collaboration with neuroradiologists, neurologists, ENT, oculoplastic and craniomaxillofacial surgeons, radiation oncologists, neuropathologists, and liaises closely with GPs, neuropsychologists, pain specialists and nurses. A/Prof. Di Ieva’s special interests in skull base surgery include treatment of complex tumours and conditions affecting the cranial nerves, the orbits and the craniocervical junction, or through non-surgical options (Gamma Knife Radiosurgery). Pain treatments include microvascular decompression (also for hemifacial spasm) and percutaneous treatments for craniofacial pain, decompression of peripheral nerves, spine surgery, failed back surgery syndrome, and neuromodulation. A/Prof. Di Ieva’s multi-disciplinary expertise extends to awake surgery and neuromonitoring, hydrocephalus, neurotraumatology, traumatic brain and spine injuries, and post-concussion patients.
A/Prof. Di Ieva is a world leader in neuro-oncology research with over 100 peer-reviewed publications and 2 textbooks, awarded international neurosurgical research awards, including the 2019 John Mitchell Crouch Fellowship, the most prestigious research award of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and leads international and national seminars and workshops teaching neuroanatomy and neurosurgical approaches. He is involved in trialling and patenting new surgical devices to benefit patients.
