Dr Apel completed his ophthalmology training in Brisbane at the University of Queensland, then undertook a post-graduate two year Corneal and External Diseases Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada from 1992-1994. He has over 20 years’ experience in treating medical and surgical conditions of the anterior segment of the eye. An accredited Consultant within the National Health Service, Dr Apel has held a position of Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Princess Alexandra Hospital since 1997. Within the NHS, he has a high volume cataract surgery practice and has performed over 7,500 cataract procedures. He has an interest in corneal surgery and is recognised as a national expert in this field. He is also heavily involved in training junior doctors in surgery. In addition to his NHS work, Dr Apel manages two successful independent private practices one in Brisbane and one in Booval. He first carried out laser vision correction in 1994 and has been constantly updating his training to keep abreast with the latest in refractive technology. Already experienced in LASIK in 2006 he was further accredited by STAAR to perform Implantable Contact Lens surgery and this technology now forms an integral part of the refractive service offered in his practice.
Dr Apel is also a Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist (DAO) for CASA. He examines the ocular health of pilots,air traffic controllers and Defence Force personnel.
