Dr Aiden O'Loughlin studied Medicine at the University of Sydney, receiving Honors for a combined MBBS BSc(Med) degree. Dr O'Loughlin completed advanced training in cardiology at St Vincent's Hospital and undertook fellowship training in interventional cardiology at Westmead Hospital and at Stanford Hospital in California. Whilst at Stanford, Dr O'Loughlin undertook the Biodesign Innovation course at the James H. Clark Biodesign Centre. Dr Aiden O'Loughlin has over 10 years experience as a clinical and interventional cardiologist. He has performed thousands of coronary, cardiac, and peripheral procedures. His procedural experience includes:
- Primary and elective coronary interventions with use of adjunctive advices (intra-aortic balloon pump, rotablator, cutting balloon, intracoronary laser, intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography and pressure wires) - Non-coronary cardiac procedures and interventions (right heart studies, temporary pacing wires, endomyocardial biopsy, pericardiocentesis, alcohol septal ablation, patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defect closure, balloon valvuloplasty (aortic, mitral, and pulmonary) and insertion of left ventricular assist devices) - Peripheral interventions (carotid, subclavian, renal, iliac and lower limb interventions)
Dr O'Loughlin has a Masters Degree in Biostatistics and Clinical Trials; and a PhD by publication for research predicting future heart attacks in patients at risk. Dr O'Loughlin has a number of ongoing research projects, collaborating with students, clinicians, scientists and engineers, in the research areas of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular devices. Dr O'Loughlin is the cardiology expert member of the Advisory Committee for Medical Devices of the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia.
