Dr Burhan is a General Adult Psychiatrist and a Psychiatrist of Old Age. He graduated from medical school in 1990. For reasons beyond his control, he moved frequently and therefore he worked as a medical officer in various specialties and various locations. He was especially attracted to the psychosocial aspects of the patients who came under his care. Dr Burhan believes that whatever causes the person to get sick, and whatever we need to do to get this person better is based on our comprehensive biological, psychological and social understanding of the person. This interest led him to choose Psychiatry as his speciality. Dr Burhan did his specialist training in psychiatry in New Zealand, and was awarded with the Fellowship of Psychiatry by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry in 2008. He also obtained the Psychiatry of Old Age subspecialty certificate in 2010.
Dr Burhan has worked in General Adult Psychiatry, and Psychiatry of Old Age in the public and private sectors, and in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Abdul, until recently, was a Visiting Medical Officer and the Clinical Leader of Mental Health Service for Older People in the Illawarra.
He established his private practice, Shellharbour Psychological Medicine in 2010, and under his leadership this clinic gained an excellent reputation and offered a holistic model of care to all his clients.
Dr Burhan’s awareness of the gaps in the public sector made him deicide to move completely to the private sector and therefore he joined South Coast Private Hospital and the Wollongong Clinic.
Dr Burhan will continue with his same role in Shellharbour Psychological Medicine. But in South Coast Private, Dr Burhan, will also offer both outpatient consultations in Wollongong Clinic, and inpatient care in South Coast Private Hospital.
Dr Burhan works closely with other Psychiatrists, GP’s, Psychologists and Mental Health Nurses to provide a comprehensive biopsychosocial experience. Dr Burhan has extensive experience in all areas of psychiatry and a sound background in general medicine. He enjoys working with clients across all backgrounds and diagnoses. He also accepts clients from the age of 18, including older people. His special interest areas are mood, anxiety, and post traumatic stress disorders.
He is offering assessments for neuropsychiatric conditions such as memory problems, cognitive difficulties and Adult ADHD.
Dr Burhan is also establishing, with the team in South Coast Private, a day program for anxiety and depression for the older person.
