Claire Weightman (Clinical Psychologist)

Since completing undergraduate training in Queensland (UQ) and postgraduate training in NSW (USyd), Claire has spent 25 years as a continuously practicing psychologist. She has worked in a succession of prominent clinical settings and as an organizational consultant in corporations, government, education and training entities throughout Australia. Claire has supervised numerous peers and colleagues and personally treated highly complex adult trauma, major mood and hyperarousal disorders, self-sabotaging, compulsive and compensatory behaviours, complex human relationships and serious grief and loss issues. Early in her career, Claire assessed and supported neurologically impaired children, moving later to strategic assessment, intervention and clinical support positions with Queensland Police and consulting in the Queensland Prisons Service. She later worked for over 5 years with long term unemployed, in former Commonwealth Employment Service and early Centrelink consultancies. In 2003, Claire began exclusively consulting for over 8 years in an HIV/GLBTI-specialised practice in Darlinghurst, Sydney (Holdsworth House Health), working with very challenging and diverse clinical presentations. On returning to Melbourne in 2011, she spent two years at the Melbourne Clinic, supervising students, interns and early career psychologists. She re-designed a young adult inpatient early intervention program and adapted existing inpatient eating disorder programs. She trained and supervised Master of Clinical Psychology postgraduate students at the Cairnmillar Institute in 2014, before returning to full-time private practice at Northside Clinic in 2015.

Claire’s continuously developing skills base includes extensive evidence-based psychotherapy expertise, including: CBT, ACT, DBT, Schema Therapy, Positive Psychology, motivational interviewing, personal coaching, a range of psychodynamic therapies (Jungian and Gestalt being particular interests), mindfulness practice and clinical hypnosis. Current clinical interests include cognitive and emotional development factors in contextual trauma recovery, resilience development, sexuality, body image and gender identity development. Claire offers WPATH care standard-based gender assessments. She supports clients experiencing issues and distress related to sexuality and relationship confusion, dysmorphia, dysphoria, group/community identification, identity satisfaction and self definition. Community psychology, gender studies, anthropology and personal identity formation are ongoing personal research and practice area interests. Claire has held successive elected committee positions with the Australian Psychological Society at local, state, national and APS College committee levels. She is an APS and AHPRA-approved supervisor of other psychologists, available for supervision of Clinical, Community, Organisational College interns and registrars and 4+2 graduates.
