Professional Experience 1971: Roger Uren graduated in medicine at the University of Sydney in 1971. 1974: Trained in internal medicine and nuclear medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and was made a Member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1974. 1976: Previous research was focused on cardiac scanning at Harvard Medical School in Boston when at The Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1976 was involved in the development of gated heart pool scans (GHPS). 1977: Fellow (FRACP) in 1977 1977: Received Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound (DDU). 1977: A Stage du Government Francais at The American Hospital in Paris in 1977 and introduced ultrasound to this hospital. 1978-1984: Staff physician in nuclear medicine at RPAH. Help introduce GHPS into routine clinical practice at RPAH. 1981-1982: Visiting Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School in 1981/82 researching SPECT scans of cerebral blood flow in stroke and epilepsy at The Beth Israel Hospital, some of the first such studies performed in humans. 1984-Current: Established a private nuclear medicine practice. 1998: Was made a Clinical Associate Professor at The University of Sydney in the Discipline of Medicine. 1999: Awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) at the University of Sydney in 1999 for his research on lymphatic drainage of the skin and breast. 2006: Promoted to Clinical Professor of Medicine. For the past 20 years, major research focus has been the study of the lymphatic drainage of the skin and breast that had its clinical manifestation in the development of the isotope method to locate the sentinel lymph node in patients with melanoma and breast cancer. Sentinel node biopsy allows unprecedented accuracy in staging the regional lymph node fields with minimal surgery. Personally perform ultrasound examinations in patients for 40 years. In addition, perform ultrasound guided fine needle biopsy of thyroid nodules and any small abnormality in lymph nodes that might be due to metastatic disease. Currently works at his practice in Suite 206, RPAH Medical Centre.
