Pre-eclampsia or preeclampsia is a multi-system disorder of pregnancy traditionally characterized by the occurrence of elevated blood pressure (hypertension) and significant amounts of protein in the urine (proteinuria). Though present in the majority of cases proteinuria need not be present to make the diagnosis of preeclampsia. Because preeclampsia is a multi-system disorder evidence of associated organ dysfunction may be used to make the diagnosis when hypertension is present.
