Dr Gunawardene’s expertise includes laparoscopic weight loss surgery, gallstone management, and minimally invasive hernia repair. He is also a GESA-accredited practitioner in both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy.
In collaboration with Liora Health, Northern Surgical Care offers a multidisciplinary model where patients benefit from coordinated support from dietitians, psychologists, and ongoing follow-up to help achieve long-term health outcomes.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Gunawardene contributes to surgical education as an Examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and teaches surgical skills to junior surgeons through RACS courses. He also holds a PhD in surgical research, with published work exploring the relationship between systemic inflammation and colorectal cancer outcomes. His practice consistently incorporates current scientific evidence to support safe, high-quality patient care.
