Mr James Thomas graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1996 and went on to specialise in orthopaedic surgery.
He received the Melville Hughes Scholarship from the University of Melbourne in 2003 and the NHMRC Scholarship in 2004.
In 2003 and 2004, Mr Thomas completed a Doctorate of Medicine Research Fellowship with the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and the University of Melbourne, supervised by Professor Wayne Morrison.
He was then accepted for a Hand Fellowship at Princess Alexandra Hospital Brisbane, Australia in 2005 before heading to the United Kingdom to complete a further Hand Fellowship at Wrightington Hospital in 2006.
Mr Thomas then enhanced his chosen specialty with a Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore, USA in 2007 before returning to Melbourne to commence private practice as a Specialist Hand Surgeon.
Today, Mr Thomas works as a Consultant Hand Surgeon at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and as a visiting Hand Surgeon at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Fitzroy and Kew, and Waverley Private Hospital in Mt Waverley, Victoria.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, a member of the Australian Hand Surgery Society and is involved in continuing medical education programmes.
