Dr Macneil trained in General Surgery for 5 years and then trained in Urology both in Australia and Britain. His training in Australia covered most aspects of general surgery as well as major vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedic surgery and adult urology with some paediatric urology. In Britain, Dr Macneil trained at the Freeman Road Hospital, a tertiary referral centre for urological oncology, and 3 years in Oxford.
This training gave Dr Macneil special expertise in the areas of urological oncology and neuro-urology. He has since developed expertise in laser ureteroscopic lithotripsy and enucleation of the prostate, as well as laparoscopic renal surgery, and has introduced these techniques to the Central Coast.
Dr Macneil's early research was undertaken at the Department of Pharmacology in Oxford. This laboratory has a close link with the Department of Urology in Oxford and has produced original research in neuro-urology over the past 20 years. His current research interests include clinical urology and teaching the discipline to registrars, 7 of whom have won state prizes for their research.
Dr Macneil is also widely published and has contributed a large volume of work on all aspects of urological surgery.
